Autumn yoga outfit advice tends to fall into two unhelpful categories: summer gear with a cardigan thrown over it, or full winter kit that you overheat in by the second sun salutation. Neither is useful. This is a practical guide to layering for the specific conditions of autumn practice in Japan.

The fabric question

Synthetic fabrics dominate the yoga clothing market because they are cheap to produce and photograph well. They also trap heat in a specific way that works in a climate-controlled studio and fails in an unheated room in October. Merino wool is the alternative worth knowing about.

Merino regulates temperature across a wider range than polyester or nylon. It is not as stretchy, which means it is not ideal for a hot vinyasa class where you need maximum range of movement. But for a mixed practice that starts cold and warms up, or for yin and restorative work where you are not generating much heat, merino is the most comfortable option we have found.

How to layer without creating problems

The layer you add at the start of a session needs to come off without interrupting the practice. That sounds obvious but it eliminates most of the options in a typical wardrobe. Hoodies with drawstrings catch on things. Zip-up tops have zips that dig in when you lie down. Oversized knits are a hazard in any inversion.

The system that works: a fitted long-sleeved base layer that you can practice in alone if needed, plus a loose short-sleeved top over it that comes off after the warm-up. The base layer does the temperature work. The outer layer is just there for the first ten minutes.

Leggings for cooler sessions

Full-length leggings are the obvious choice for autumn, but the fabric weight matters. A legging that is comfortable in a heated studio in July will feel thin on a cold tatami floor in November. Look for a mid-weight fabric with a brushed inner surface, which adds warmth without bulk.

Fit at the waist is worth paying attention to. A waistband that sits securely through forward folds and inversions without digging in is harder to find than it should be. Mika's clothing reviews in the practice guides section include specific notes on waistband behaviour across different poses, which is the detail most brand descriptions omit.

The right autumn kit is not about buying more. It is about knowing what the practice actually asks of the fabric, and choosing accordingly. The clothing reviews section has specific tested options if you want somewhere to start.
