The story behind Silt Lab Blend
Rooted in practice, open to life.
Mika Tanaka started Silt Lab Blend in the autumn of 2019 from a small apartment in Kyoto, after seven years of practicing in studios and two years of teaching community classes on weekends. The site began as a place to write down what she was learning, because she kept having the same conversations with students who wanted to know what mat to buy, how to practice when they were tired, and whether the expensive leggings were actually worth it. Writing it all down once and sharing the link felt more honest than repeating herself.
The turning point came in early 2020, when the studios closed and a lot of people suddenly needed to practice at home with no guidance and no props. Traffic to the site jumped, the inbox filled up, and it became clear that the gap between glossy yoga media and the actual daily experience of practicing was much wider than anyone had admitted. Mika spent that year writing the guides she wished had existed when she started: unglamorous, specific, and honest about the days when the practice feels like a chore.
By 2022 the shop had grown from a single mat recommendation into a small selection of essentials, all tested in Mika's own practice and in the home sessions of a small group of regular contributors. The writing has stayed personal. The shop has stayed small on purpose. Seven years in, Silt Lab Blend is still run from Japan, still shaped by the seasons, and still trying to be the most useful yoga resource for people who take their practice seriously without taking themselves too seriously.
